The project
With an initial €2.3 million in funding now unlocked, work is officially underway on the major restoration and adaptive reuse of the former Vittorio Emanuele Hospital on Via Plebiscito. The historic landmark is set to be transformed into the Mount Etna Museum, a premier cultural hub and the cornerstone of urban regeneration for Catania’s Antico Corso district.
The project forms part of a major €25 million investment plan, with over €11 million already allocated and active. A high-impact initiative driven by a partnership between the Municipality of Catania, the University of Catania, and ERSU, the redeveloped complex will feature not only museum facilities, but also lecture halls for 3,000 students, university housing, and direct access to the city’s metro network.
Our role
Given the historical and architectural significance of the project, our company has been entrusted with all structural and architectural steelwork, playing a central role in delivering both structural integrity and design excellence.
Our scope of work included:
- Structural reinforcement: engineered steel interventions designed to consolidate and secure historic masonry walls.
- Primary and secondary steelwork: fabrication and erection of structural framework tailored to the building’s new layout.
- Bespoke historic restoration Solutions: specialized steel fabrications seamlessly integrated into pre-existing spaces in full compliance with heritage preservation standards.
- Architectural and structural steel features: Exposed steel elements and architectural finishes that combine modern design with the historic character of the building.
Transforming a heritage property into a high-traffic public space demands far more than hands-on execution; it requires certified expertise and rigorous design control. Merging structural steel with historical architecture calls for painstaking precision—ensuring full functionality for the new museum and educational spaces while preserving the architectural identity of the building.
The Mount Etna Museum represents much more than a construction site: it is a transformative urban, cultural, and social revitalization effort showcasing the world-class capabilities of Sicily's skilled industrial sector. We are proud to contribute our craftsmanship and expertise to a project that will restore a site of invaluable heritage to Catania and all of Sicily.
